About Van Duzer Vineyards
Carl and Marilynn Thoma founded Van Duzer Vineyards in 1998 on an 82-acre estate set on a windy knoll in the foothills of the Coast Range west of Salem. The vineyard sits directly in the path of cool marine air that pours through a gap in the mountains known as the Van Duzer Corridor, which became its own federally recognized wine region in 2019. The family-owned winery grows Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Syrah.
The estate tasting room on Smithfield Road is open daily from 11 am to 5 pm. The Classic Tasting of current releases takes 60 to 90 minutes and costs $25, waived with a $60 purchase. The guided Block Collection tasting compares small-production Pinot Noirs from individual blocks of the vineyard for $40, waived with a $75 purchase. Parties of up to 10 can reserve online, and larger groups and tour groups arrange visits by email.
Outside food and drinks are not allowed, but the tasting room sells cheese and charcuterie boards with local hazelnuts and dried fruit. The winery calls itself family friendly; children are welcome with a parent and need a seat counted in the reservation because this is a working production facility. Well-behaved leashed dogs may join you on the outdoor patio when weather and seating allow. The winery also runs a second tasting room in Dundee.
JB Family Growers' lavender farm and flower market near Silverton is the closest lavender stop in our directory, roughly 50 minutes east through Salem, so pairing the two works best as a full summer day.
