About Wright's Farm
Wright's Farm in Gardiner began in 1904, when Charles Baker Wright bought 108 acres and started a dairy. The family turned to commercial apples by the late 1950s, and today the sixth generation farms 453 acres with mountain views. Picking admission also covers the farm's picnic areas and its hiking and biking trails.
Picking comes in three waves. Sweet and sour cherries, including Emperor Francis, Montmorency, Balaton, North Star and Suda, ripen from mid-June to early July and usually peak in late June. Cut flowers follow from midsummer into early fall. Apples open around September 5 and run through the end of October, rain or shine, moving from Honeycrisp, Gala and McIntosh early to Fuji, Mutsu, Winesap and Granny Smith late. No reservation is needed for apples, and picking maps are handed out at the gate.
The farm market is open every day of the year, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with cider donuts, pies (the apple pies use the farm's own Empire apples), house-made jams and preserves and local honey. Gardiner Brewing Co., started by the fifth generation in 2018 in an old dairy barn behind the farm, pours seasonal beers made with farm-grown ingredients on weekend afternoons, often with music on the patio. Dogs are welcome for picking, and the farm also offers tent camping, RV stays and a farmhouse rental.
Lavender Fields at Maxwell Farm in Delhi, the closest lavender farm on our list, is about an hour and a half northwest through the Catskills, so plan the two on separate days or as a long summer loop during cherry season.
