About Beckmen Vineyards
Beckmen Vineyards is a family winery outside Los Olivos in the Santa Ynez Valley, run by a father and two of his sons. The estate dates to 1994, and the winery says it was the first vineyard in Santa Barbara County to be farmed biodynamically, with certification since 2009 and no herbicides, insecticides or nitrogen fertilizers. Rhône grapes are the focus: recent releases include Syrah, Grenache rosé and Chardonnay from their Purisima Mountain Vineyard and a blend called Cuvée le Bec.
The tasting room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A seated flight of five wines costs $30 and usually takes 45 minutes to an hour, on the covered deck or at the bar. For a closer look, the Farm to Glass tour ($60, daily at 11 a.m., about 90 minutes) walks through the vineyard and the winery and barrel rooms before a five-wine tasting; a private tour with a cheese and charcuterie platter runs $125 and must be booked 72 hours ahead.
The grounds are a good place to slow down. Gazebos overlook a pond and garden, and outside food is welcome; the winery points visitors to delis and cheese shops in Los Olivos for supplies. Children are welcome with adult supervision, and leashed dogs are allowed, though guests under 21 and dogs cannot join the two tours. Bottle service at a gazebo or dock requires one bottle per two people.
Clairmont Farms, a lavender farm producing since 1998, is also in Los Olivos, about 10 minutes away. Pair a morning walk among the lavender with a picnic lunch and an afternoon tasting at Beckmen.
