About Downtown Joe's
Downtown Joe's is a brewery and American restaurant on Main Street in downtown Napa, set inside the Oberon, a building that went up in 1893. In its early years the Oberon sold cigars and offered shaves and haircuts; after a fire in 1932 it was rebuilt in art deco style. The brewpub opened here in 1988 as Willit's Brewery with a seven-barrel system, and in 1993 local owners Joe and Nancye Peatman bought it and gave it the name it has today. The Peatman family still runs the place, and the beer is brewed in house.
The doors open at 8 a.m. every day, so it works as a breakfast stop before a day out, as well as for lunch or dinner. The patio wraps around the old building, looks out toward the Napa River and is heated on cool evenings, and the restaurant says pets are welcome there. A small seismograph installed during a 2010 earthquake retrofit has been sending data to the USGS since 2012, and the building came through the 2014 Napa earthquake.
The kitchen cooks from scratch: beer-battered fish and chips, Cajun penne with chicken, wings, and a California Benedict with hash browns in the morning. There is live music nearly every night, games on during sports viewings, and a Monday happy hour at the outdoor bar. Birthday, holiday and company parties can be booked through their website.
HvH Specialty Growers, a flower farm in Suisun Valley that opens for seasonal events including a lavender celebration, is about 25 minutes east by Highway 12. Check HvH's event dates first, then come back to Napa for dinner on the river patio.
