About Gold Hill Vineyard and Brewery

Gold Hill Vineyard and Brewery, on Vineyard Lane in the Placerville area, makes both wine and beer, so it suits a group where not everyone wants the same thing. The wine list is long for a small foothill producer: Viognier, two Chardonnays (one steel-fermented, one aged 18 months in French oak), a Barbera Rosato and a sparkling wine, then reds including Barbera, Zinfandel, Syrah, Mourvedre, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and an equal-parts Bordeaux blend called Meriticious Red. A Zinfandel port rounds it out.

The brewery side pours five house beers: the 49'er Red amber, which earned an honorable mention at the California State Fair in 2011, Boomtown IPA, Gold Trail Pale Ale, Old Miner's Scotch ale and Hank's Porter, named for the founder. A taster tray is $14.95, pints are $7, and you can buy a growler for $30 or refill one for $23. Every wine is also sold by the glass, mostly at $15.

The tasting room and taproom are open Thursday through Sunday from 11 to 5, and the winery takes appointments on other days. Bottle discounts start at six bottles. The property also hosts weddings and private events. From Sacramento, the winery's directions send you up Highway 50 to Shingle Springs; from Interstate 80, you come in by Highway 49 and Cold Springs Road.

Bluestone Meadow, the Apple Hill lavender and apple farm where visitors cut their own lavender and walk a labyrinth during its summer season, is about 20 minutes away by car.
