About Hartvale Cottage

Hartvale Cottage is a private cottage for two adults set about 100 meters from the main house in Hartvale Gardens, a five-acre cottage garden at the base of Mount York in the Hartley Valley. The garden was designed by a builder and an artist, and is planted with lavender, penstemons, salvias, roses and dahlias, with a potager, kitchen garden and small hothouse. It is part of the Central Tablelands Garden Trail and looks its best in spring and autumn (September–November and March–May).

Inside, the cottage has high ceilings, a big picture window toward the valley and the Mount York escarpment, a fireplace, a king bed, a full kitchen and a bathroom with a soaking tub and walk-in shower. A breakfast basket is included, and there are two verandas, one with a barbecue.

Guests can wander the garden and picnic under the big oak by the dam, where ducks gather and kangaroos often come by. A visit to the on-site art studio of Jennifer Edwards can be arranged when you book. Bring bicycles if you can: the country lanes lead to historic Hartley village, with 17 sandstone buildings dating from 1837.

Blue Mountains Lavender is also in Little Hartley, only a few minutes away, though it has said it is not opening to visitors for the 2026/27 season.
