About Port Arthur Lavender

Port Arthur Lavender is a family farm on the Arthur Highway, run by Brendan and Clare Dean, about five minutes before you reach the Port Arthur Historic Site. It opened to visitors in October 2014. The seven-hectare (18-acre) property looks out over Long Bay and mixes lavender rows with patches of rainforest and small lakes. Together with a second farm at Pawleena, the family grows, harvests and processes more than 16,000 lavender plants, cutting the lavender by hand and distilling it on site.

A self-guided trail through the property is free, with interactive displays that explain how lavender goes from field to bottle. When the still is running in season you can watch the distillation, and at other times a video shows the process. Interpretive signs are also available in Mandarin. The farm is open every day except Christmas Day, with earlier opening from January to Easter, when the peninsula is at its busiest.

The café serves lavender-themed dishes made with Tasmanian produce, including seafood, and the whole menu can be ordered as takeaway. Bookings are recommended. Ice cream, cakes, slices, lavender fudge and chocolates are sold at the counter. The shop stocks the farm's handmade lavender range: essential oil, soaps, bath and body products, linen, candles, stationery, jams, honey and teas. The farm also hosts private functions, and the family runs a second shop on Bridge Street in Richmond.

Stewarts Bay Lodge and its On the Bay restaurant are about five minutes down the road, close to the historic site, if you want to stay the night.
