About The Orchard
The Orchard is a family produce shop on Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn. Daniel Spitz started it in 1957 with the aim of selling the best fruit in the city, and it has stayed in the family since; Marisa and Mitchell Spitz now tell its story. Staff still choose fruit and vegetables by hand each day from local markets and growers they trust.
Much of the shop's work goes into what it makes from that fruit: gift baskets, platters and trays, chocolate-dipped fruit and pre-cut fruit, along with prepared salads and dips and juices made in-house. Platters, prepared foods and juices are put together fresh every day, and the shelves also carry dried fruit and nuts, vegetables and grocery items.
Orders can be picked up at the Brooklyn shop or hand-delivered across Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island and Long Island, with New Jersey deliveries on certain days. Large, multi-address or custom orders go through the shop by phone or email. The Orchard keeps early hours, opening at 8 a.m. every day and closing at 4 p.m. on weekdays and 3 p.m. on weekends, so it suits a morning stop.
Pleasant Valley Lavender in Morganville, New Jersey, is about an hour southwest by way of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and Staten Island. It welcomes picnics in its fields, so a fruit platter picked up here makes an easy lunch for a summer afternoon among the lavender.
