About The Selborne Arms

The Selborne Arms is the village pub on Selborne's High Street, inside the South Downs National Park and a few doors from Gilbert White's House. Run by Nick and Hayley Carter, it keeps real fires burning in the colder months and pours five local real ales, twelve wines by the glass and a local sparkling wine, with plenty of soft drinks for drivers and children.

The menu mixes traditional pub dishes with more inventive plates made from local and homemade produce. Lunch is served from noon to 2pm, Tuesday to Sunday, and dinner from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, Tuesday to Saturday, with takeaway options most days. The pub is open from about 11am to 10pm, though in winter it closes from 3pm to 5pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Booking is recommended for indoor tables and larger groups.

Walkers use the pub as a base for the Zig Zag Path, which climbs Selborne Hanger behind the village, and the longer Hangers Way. The large garden has a play area for children, and the pub hosts quiz nights, music evenings and beer festivals, including the long-running Zig Zag Fest, which reached its 21st year in September 2025. Park in the pub's bottom car park and register your car at the bar; the top car park belongs to Gilbert White's House and charges non-museum visitors.

The Lavender Fields at Hartley Park Farm lie just outside the village against the Selborne Hanger, only a few minutes' drive away, so lunch here fits neatly around a summer visit to the lavender.
