About Gildas' Lake Street Bakery

Gildas' Lake Street Bakery, listed in some guides as Boyne City Bakery, is run by Gildas Berrou, a baker from Brittany who apprenticed as a teenager and traveled France with a craftsmen's guild before baking in Tel Aviv. On a visit to his in-laws in Boyne City he fell for the town and stayed, taking over a downtown space that had been a doughnut shop.

The specialty is made-to-order buckwheat crêpes in the Breton style. The batter is only buckwheat flour, water and sea salt, from his mother's recipe, and his son Killian works the crêpe grill. Savory crêpes are made with scrambled eggs, and ham, egg and cheese is the baker's own pick; banana with chocolate-hazelnut spread is the most popular. The case also holds croissants, bread, quiche, soup and pastries, including kouign-amann, the caramelized Breton butter cake that the baker counts as his favorite.

Hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and indoor seating is limited. The Lake Charlevoix waterfront is a short walk away. In summer the bakery also sells at the Boyne City and Charlevoix farmers markets, and it shows up at Boyne City's Harvest Fest at the end of September and Charlevoix's Applefest in mid-October.

Lavender Hill Farm is about 15 minutes north on Horton Bay Road North. Lavender Hill Farm on Horton Bay Road North is free to walk on your own daily from 10 to 5 during its 2026 season (May 6 to late October), with u-cut lavender after peak bloom in July and a boutique and tasting room.
