About Burning Kiln Winery

Burning Kiln Winery grew out of Norfolk County's tobacco country. For generations the sandy loam here grew premium tobacco, cured in the kilns that still dot the countryside; when that industry faded, a group of local partners founded the winery in 2011 as a way to help rebuild the community. Today the property covers more than 50 acres on Front Road in St. Williams, with views toward the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve on Lake Erie.

The tasting bar is open daily from noon to 6, and wine is poured by the glass or bottle all year. A flight of three one-ounce pours costs $10 and is first come, first served, though you can reserve. The $25 guided tour walks through the vineyard, the kilns and the production room with samples along the way, then finishes with a three-wine flight and a look at the barrel room. For a sit-down lesson, the $40 Tipsy Tutorial pairs four wines with local snacks and tips from a staff expert.

Charcuterie is served during tasting hours. Through the year the winery runs Concerts in the Vineyard, workshops and seasonal traditions, posted on its events page, and its website lists places to stay for visitors who want to linger in Norfolk County.

Apple Hill Lavender in Windham Centre is about half an hour north, and Bonnieheath Estate near Waterford is a similar drive, so a lavender morning and an afternoon tasting near the lake make a full day.
