About Gregory Graham Wines
Gregory Graham Wines is a small, owner-run winery in the Red Hills of Lake County, near Lower Lake. Greg Graham studied enology at UC Davis and made wine at Rombauer, where he became head winemaker in 1988, before starting his own label in 1992 with grapes bought in Napa, Carneros and Knights Valley. In 2000 he and his wife, Marianne, bought a 13-acre Zinfandel vineyard in the Red Hills, later added a neighboring 13-acre Cabernet vineyard, and in 2006 built the winery at the foot of those vine-covered hills. It has run on solar power since 2011.
The tasting room is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 to 5, and Greg or Marianne is often the one pouring. The wine list is split into whites, elegant reds and big reds, and the estate fruit includes Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petite Sirah, the last grafted onto an acre of Syrah vines in 2013. A trip to Gigondas in France sparked Greg's interest in Rhône grapes like Syrah.
Dogs are welcome, and groups of more than six are asked to call ahead for a reservation. Their website also shares food pairing ideas for the wines. The winery lists only a post office box, so call for directions before you set out.
Purple Hills Lavender Farm in the Alexander Valley, where visitors stroll the rows, picnic and meet the goats, is on the Sonoma County side of the Mayacamas, roughly an hour and 15 minutes from Lower Lake, which makes it a full-day pairing in summer.
