About Hanson House Bed & Breakfast

Hanson House was built in 1890 for Rasmus Hanson, a Grayling lumber baron, and his family. The Victorian house has been turned into a small inn that keeps original woodwork, fireplaces and pieces from the Hanson family's years in town, and it sits among other historic homes a few blocks from downtown.

There are four king suites, each for two guests. The Hanson Suite, Rasmus Hanson's own room, has tall ceilings and an original hand-carved oak fireplace; the AuSable Room also has an original fireplace and bright light; the Lake Margrethe Room has a marble bath and window seat; and the Manistee Room is the only main-floor room, with a walk-in shower. Guests share a grand dining room and several sitting rooms, with WiFi, snacks and soft drinks always available.

Instead of a cooked breakfast, each night's rate includes a voucher per guest for breakfast or dinner at one of the inn's partner restaurants in town. The inn is open in every season, and check-in is at 2 p.m., check-out at 11 a.m. Its cancellation rules are strict: full refunds only 48 hours or more before arrival.

Uncommon Ranch is about 20 minutes east. A July night here pairs well with a morning of picking lavender.

What to do

  • Book the Hanson Suite with its hand-carved oak fireplace
  • Use your meal voucher at a partner restaurant downtown
  • Walk to Grayling's shops, breweries and the Au Sable River

Tips for your visit

  • Cancel at least 48 hours ahead for a full refund; later cancellations get a credit or nothing
  • All rooms sleep two, so larger groups need more than one suite
  • The Manistee Room is the only main-floor room, useful if you want to avoid stairs
