About Hillwood Berries Farmgate

Hillwood Berries is a second-generation family farm on the east bank of the Tamar River, about 20 minutes north of Launceston just off the East Tamar Highway. The Dornauf family came to Hillwood in 2010, planting the first two hectares of strawberries that year; the farm has since grown to about 52 hectares of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries, most of them grown under tunnels, which stretches the season.

The berry harvest generally runs from November through May. Blackberries start in mid-November with the early Karaka variety and carry on with later varieties until the end of May, and raspberries give a summer crop and a second autumn crop. At the pick-your-own patch, published prices are A$12 per kilogram for strawberries and A$30 per kilogram for raspberries and blackberries; what is ready changes through the season.

Entry to the farmgate café is free. It is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and serves coffee and desserts made with the farm's berries, and the shop sells fresh fruit along with berry jams, sauces, vinegars and fruit wines.

Lavender House in Rowella is about 25 minutes away across the Batman Bridge on the West Tamar, and Bridestowe Estate at Nabowla is under an hour east.
