About Lavender House Perfumery
Lavender House Perfumery sits at Rowella on the west bank of the Tamar River, about 38 kilometers from Launceston along the Tamar Valley Wine Route. The family has grown English lavender here since 1991, distilling it into essential oil for its own perfume oils and drying the flowers for cooking and sewn goods. The gardens hold many English lavender cultivars along with other plants used in perfume and aromatherapy, so the beds show a range of flower colors and leaf types.
Something is usually flowering. Spanish-type lavender (Lavandula stoechas) blooms in spring, September to November. English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and the intermedia types flower from late November to the end of January, and that is also when the English lavender is harvested. In autumn, late February to April, intermedia, stoechas and dentata types carry on, and some dentata flowers through winter. Seasons are reversed from the Northern Hemisphere here.
Visitors can look around the working gallery, the distillery and the shop. The shelves hold the house's own skin and body care, balms, perfumes, aromatherapy products, hydrosols, English lavender essential oil, culinary lavender and sewn items such as eye pillows. The shop is closed on Sundays.
Holm Oak Vineyards is also in Rowella, about 10 minutes away, if you want to add a cellar door to the afternoon.
