About Holm Oak Vineyards

Holm Oak takes its name from the trees a tennis racquet company planted here in the 1930s, hoping to grow timber for racquet frames. The wood never made the grade, and grapes went in instead in 1983, making this one of Tasmania's older vineyards. Today winemaker Bec Duffy and viticulturist Tim Duffy look after 18 hectares on grey soils over mudstone, half of it pinot noir, alongside chardonnay, pinot gris, riesling, cabernet sauvignon and small plots of arneis and cabernet franc. Their top pinot, The Wizard, is named for a racquet.

The cellar door opens Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (2026). Three tastings are offered: a Pinot Noir flight of five wines from estate parcels for A$30, a Choose Your Own flight of four wines for A$15 that takes about an hour, and a Reds flight for A$15 that pairs well with cheese and charcuterie from the larder. Groups are capped at eight, and booking ahead is preferred; bookings are refundable up to an hour before.

Before or after tasting, walk the sensory garden, planted to echo the aromas and textures of the estate's grape varieties; guided garden tours are seasonal, but you can walk it on your own. Families are welcome, and children can feed apples to the resident pigs. You can put together a picnic from the cellar door providore. Dogs are welcome, but let staff know before you bring one in, as the resident dog can be territorial.

Lavender House is also in Rowella, only a few minutes away, so the two make an easy Tamar Valley pairing; the region is about 40 minutes' drive from Launceston.
