About Kennedy's Bakery

Kennedy's Bakery, known around Cambridge as "The Original," has been baking on Wheeling Avenue, the old U.S. 40 through downtown, since 1925. The current owners' grandfather started it, and a regional magazine profile described siblings Bobby and Patty Kennedy running it on the family's original recipes after taking it over in 1993.

The cases hold donuts, bagels, breads, cakes, pies, cupcakes, pastries, cookies, brownies and bars, with seasonal items through the year and wedding cakes to order. Two old favorites are worth asking for: Chinese tea cookies, small shortbread-style rounds topped with a bright thumbprint of icing, and devil dogs, soft cake logs filled with white and chocolate frosting. The shop is known for its cakes, and holiday orders are best placed early.

The bakers start well before dawn so the morning donuts are ready when the doors open. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday. The county visitors bureau notes that buses and groups are welcome, which makes it a practical stop for a tour group passing through on U.S. 40 or I-70.

Pick up a box on the way out of town: The Farm on Bear Lane, listed as a lavender grower near Cumberland, is roughly 20 minutes south. Its visiting details are not confirmed, so check its website before you go.
