About The Apple Shed
The Apple Shed is the farm market of Maple Ridge Fruit Farm, which the Welcher family started in 1906 on Fairville Maple Ridge Road north of Newark. The first trees went in a year later, and the oldest trees still standing date to 1942. Gary and Barb Wells now run the farm as its fourth generation, with nearly 80,000 trees on 100 acres between the Lake Ontario fruit belt and the Finger Lakes. The market opened in 1973, and Old Goat Cidery was added in 2017.
Harvest runs from late August into early November across more than 25 varieties, among them SnapDragon and RubyFrost, both exclusive to New York State. The 2026 list included Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Crispin, Macoun, Empire, Cortland, 20-Ounce and Autumn Crisp, with more arriving each week. This is not a walk-in U-pick orchard: on select fall weekends guests ride a wagon about 20 minutes out to the trees. The posted picking for October 17–18, 2026 was Pink Lady and Fuji, at $10 for a peck bag or $15 for a half bushel plus the wagon fare.
The market sells produce, sweet cider, donuts, pies, cookies, home decor and pumpkins, and a glass beehive inside lets kids spot the marked queen. The lunch café makes sandwiches such as a turkey, bacon and grilled-apple panini, along with soups and kids' meals. Outside are a corn slide, a combine-shaped climbing structure, a basketball hoop inside an old grain bin, goats, ducks and chickens, and a covered picnic pavilion, plus apple cannons on weekends. October 2026 brought story hours, paint nights and food truck visits.
Ol'Factory Lavender & Herb Farm near Red Creek is about 40 minutes northeast. Its lavender festival is in July, before the main apple harvest here, so plan the lavender for midsummer and come back to the Apple Shed from September on.
