About Rooster Hill Vineyards
Rooster Hill Vineyards grows its grapes on the east side of Keuka Lake, just outside Penn Yan. Founders Amy and David left careers in Southern California in 2000 to farm here, and they named each estate vineyard for a family member. Savina, planted in 2002, and Catherine, planted in 2003, grow Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Lemberger and Pinot Noir, with Gewürztraminer at Catherine. Giuseppi adds Vidal Blanc for the Silver Pencil blend, and Barbara Anne, planted in 2013, grows Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Together the four blocks cover about 11 acres. The winery's motto is that the wine is made in the vineyard.
The tasting room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. At the bar inside, you choose any six wines, ciders or port with a guide. In warmer months the patio, terrace and lawn serve preset six-wine flights in one-ounce pours on a flight board, with a featured welcome wine. The setting is the draw: vineyard rows run down toward Keuka Lake, and the terrace faces the sunset.
Light refreshments are available. Pets are welcome as long as they are friendly. Parties of seven or fewer do not need a reservation, but tables can be booked, and larger groups are asked to contact the winery ahead, especially as fall approaches. Rooster Hill is part of the CK Cellars family of wineries.
Aurora Lavender Farm, above Honeoye Lake to the west, is about 50 minutes away by back roads, so a summer weekend can pair its farm shop with an afternoon flight on the Rooster Hill terrace.
