About Standing Stone Vineyards

Standing Stone Vineyards grows grapes on the eastern slopes of Seneca Lake in the southeast corner of the lake, where the slope, soils and water nearby help later-ripening grapes come in. Old vines are part of the appeal, and the site grows varieties that are uncommon in the Finger Lakes, including Saperavi and Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Chardonnay and Petit Verdot. Since 2017 it has shared owners with Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard across the lake, run by Fred and Maressa Merwarth and Oskar Bynke.

The tasting room is open Thursday through Monday from noon to 5 p.m., and no appointment is needed. Wine comes by the glass, by the bottle or in flights to share, and you can build your own tasting or let the staff choose. Wine service ends 30 minutes before closing, though the shop sells bottles until close. A heated deck makes flights outdoors possible into the cool months, and the views run over old vines to Seneca Lake.

Food is simple: rotating local snacks, packaged goods and charcuterie boxes. Local cider and beer, non-alcoholic cocktails and juices are also poured. The winery says it is child and pet friendly. Seating is set up for parties of two to six, and parking is tight for limousines, buses and camper vans.

The closest lavender farm by road is Ol'Factory Lavender & Herb Farm in Red Creek, about an hour and 10 minutes north on Route 414, so it works best as a long summer day around Seneca and Cayuga lakes.
