About Meadows Original Frozen Custard
Meadows Original Frozen Custard began in the summer of 1950, when J.V., Richard and Delbert Meadows opened a small custard stand in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, and drew lines of more than 50 people from the start. The family recipe hasn't changed since, and each of the 25-plus Meadows shops in six states makes its custard fresh throughout the day, in view of customers. The Chambersburg shop is one of them.
The Chambersburg location is open every day from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. all year, with an express drive-thru, walk-up windows and a walk-in parlor. It serves four custard flavors each day, including vanilla and chocolate, along with a fat-free, no-sugar-added vanilla frozen yogurt and a low-fat yogurt flavor that changes weekly.
House favorites include the black cow, orange fluff, apple dumpling sundae, turtle and chipper custard sandwiches. The menu also runs to sundaes with a long list of toppings, thick shakes and extra-thick frosts, candy-blended Arctic Swirls, Italian ice, gelati layered with custard, and fruit smoothies made with frozen yogurt. Custard cakes with a chocolate cake layer and fudge center can be ordered by calling the shop, and its email club offers a free small cone or cup on your birthday.
The Lavender Owl Farm in Mercersburg, which holds seasonal u-pick days, is about 30 minutes southwest, so a cone here is an easy stop on the drive to or from a summer lavender visit.
