About The Brafferton Inn

The Brafferton Inn began in 1786, when tanner Michael Hoke started a townhouse of local brown stone east of the crossroads village then called Gettystown; the inn calls it the oldest deeded house in Gettysburg. In 1843 Nicholas Codori, a butcher from Alsace, bought it for $1,600 and added a carriage house and meat market. During the battle the Codori family sheltered in the basement as bullets struck the house, and for months afterward it served as a Catholic chapel while the church was filled with wounded soldiers. Locals still call it the Codori House.

Joan, Brian and AmyBeth Hodges have run the inn since 2005. Its 18 rooms, nine of them suites, range from Colonial and Victorian to farmhouse style, and some have king beds, jetted tubs or gas fireplaces. Brian, who spent 20 years in restaurants, cooks the breakfast included with each stay, and afternoon cookies plus round-the-clock coffee, tea and cocoa are set out. The parlor holds books on the battle and original paintings by Civil War artist Keith Rocco, and there is a garden and deck out back.

The inn sits half a block from Lincoln Square, within walking distance of the Wills House, the Majestic Theater, Gettysburg College, shops and ghost tours. Guests must be 10 or older, pets are not allowed, and weekends from April through November require a two-night stay.

Abraham's Battlefield Lavender is about 4 miles south of town, roughly 10 minutes by car; check its social pages for open days.
