About Loew Vineyards

Loew Vineyards sits on Liberty Road in the rolling country west of Baltimore, near Mt. Airy, and it carries on a family winemaking tradition the Loews trace back for centuries. Its best-known bottle is Mechaya, a honey wine in the mead style that the winery calls Maryland's first Star-K kosher honey wine. Beyond that, the list includes a line of kosher wines called The Kosher Project and a Tribute Series.

The tasting room opens Friday from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., plus noon to 5 p.m. on federal holiday Mondays; other weekdays are by reservation only. The standard visit is a $25 guided tasting of six wines with a tasting associate, who also tells the story of the family's winemaking. Glasses and bottles are sold on site, and wine club members taste free with up to three guests. Booking a table is recommended if you want to sit indoors, and groups of six or more need a reservation.

Loew is relaxed about picnics. Outside food and non-alcoholic drinks are allowed, and you may bring your own chairs, tents and tables for the grounds; the only alcohol allowed is what the winery makes. Cheeses, honey, salami and crackers from Mid-Atlantic producers are sold on site. The winery calls itself family friendly, asking that children stay with their parents, and leashed, friendly dogs are welcome if you let the staff know ahead. Events are posted on its website.

Serene Lavender Farm in Sykesville, which offers pick-your-own and educational visits, is about 20 minutes east along Liberty Road, so the two pair easily on a summer weekend.
