About Boordy Vineyards

Boordy Vineyards has made wine since 1945 and is run by the R.B. Deford family, who count eight decades of winemaking. The home farm sits on Long Green Pike in Hydes, northeast of Baltimore, with tended vines, restored barns and a wine cellar inside an 18th-century fieldstone barn. Wines range from Chardonnay grown in the Long Green Vineyard to Cabernet and Albariño from the family's South Mountain Vineyard, organized into the Landmark Series, Chesapeake Icons and Sweetland Cellars lines.

The winery is open every day from noon to 5 p.m., with wine sales and flights ending half an hour before closing, and it closes on November 27, December 25 and 31, January 1 and July 4. Flights are served at your table in the barn cellar or outside on the bluestone patios. Private guided tours of the vineyard, winery and barrel cellar are led by staff and require a reservation.

Age rules depend on the day. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday every visitor must be 21 or older; families with children are welcome on Thursday and Sunday and at selected weekend events, with children staying beside their guardians. Only service dogs are allowed. Gourmet food trucks come on weekends, and food bought at Boordy is the only food allowed in the barn. Summer brings Good Life Thursdays with local farm and creamery partners, weekend music, a supper club with Baltimore chefs, and performances by the Baltimore Symphony and Maryland Opera.

Serene Lavender Farm in Sykesville, which offers pick-your-own and educational visits, is about 45 minutes west by the Baltimore Beltway, so pair them on a long summer Sunday when children can come along to both.
