About Milntown Café

Milntown, in the parish of Lezayre just outside Ramsey, was home to the Christian family from at least the 15th century until 1886; William Christian, the Manx patriot known as Illiam Dhone, was born here in 1608. The present mansion dates from the 1750s and was remodeled in Gothic style after 1828. Sir Clive Edwards left the house and its 15 acres of gardens and woodland to a charitable trust in 1999, and the estate has been open to the public since.

The café is a purpose-built conservatory looking onto the walled garden and the Winchester gates. Lunch runs 11:30 to 3:45 with home-cooked seasonal dishes and light plates on a menu that changes weekly; on Sundays it is Sunday lunch only. Afternoon tea and cakes start at 2:30, and tea, coffee and homemade cake are served until last orders at 4:30. Booking is essential, and dietary needs should be mentioned when you book.

Make time for the house. Self-guided tours run during café hours and are paid at the café till, and volunteers lead guided tours for groups. Rooms are furnished in the style of Lady Edwards and Sir Clive, with features from Deemster Christian's 1830 refurbishment. The house can close for private events, and the café takes private parties of up to 60.

Manx Lavender at Sandygate is about 10 minutes northwest across the northern plain, so lunch here pairs neatly with a summer open day among the lavender.
