About Statewide Products

Statewide Products is a family-owned food distributor in Albuquerque that Joe and Penny Smith founded in 1968, starting out delivering cookies around New Mexico. The company says it was the first distributor to put jarred New Mexico chile and salsa on local grocery shelves, and it is now run by the second and third generations of the family.

Most of its business is delivering snacks and specialty foods to grocery stores, but the warehouse on Prospect Avenue NE also has a thrift store where visitors can buy discounted food. The products it features lean local: Hatch and roasted green chile, New Mexico and Chimayo salsas, pistachios, red chile strawberry preserves, jerky, nuts and coffee, along with chips and pretzels.

The published hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm, so this is a weekday stop. It suits travelers who want to bring home jars of New Mexico chile and salsa without paying gift-shop prices; the selection changes with what is in the warehouse. An online shop also sells some of the same New Mexico products.

Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm is about 15 minutes west across the valley. Visit the lavender fields and farm shop in the morning, then swing by on a weekday afternoon to stock up on chile and salsa for the trip home.

What to do

  • Buy discounted New Mexico green chile and salsa at the thrift store
  • Look for Chimayo salsa and red chile strawberry preserves
  • Stock up on pistachios, jerky and nuts for the road
