About Sugar Moon Farm
Maple sugaring on this hillside in the Cobequid Hills goes back to 1973, when Bob Williams ran it as Boondock Maple Products and Pancake House. Scott and Quita apprenticed with him for two years in sugaring and horse logging, took over in 1996 and renamed it Sugar Moon Farm; 2026 is their 30th year. Sap season here usually runs three to six weeks between mid-February and mid-April, and it takes about 40 litres of sap to make one litre of syrup, boiled down over a wood fire. Hurricane Fiona damaged the sugar woods in September 2022.
The restaurant cooks from scratch with local and organic ingredients: Red Fife buttermilk pancakes, a neighbor's wild blueberries, maple whipped cream, Nova Scotia pork sausages, smoked bacon and slow-cooked maple baked beans. Summer has brought pop-up brunches with visiting chefs. Reservations are made through their website.
Hikers can tackle the Rogart Mountain Trail, a rugged, often steep 6.2 km loop that starts and ends in the farm's parking lot and takes about 1.5 to 3 hours. It is open year-round and links to roughly 25 km more trail in the Gully Lake Wilderness Area; snowshoe rentals can be booked ahead in winter. Leashed dogs are welcome.
The farm and restaurant close for winter at the end of October and reopen in spring, so check the home page before you go. Seafoam Lavender Company on the Northumberland Shore is about 30 minutes north, and its store is open Mother's Day weekend to mid-October.
