About 1816 Modern Kitchen & Drinks

1816 Modern Kitchen & Drinks takes its name from the year Corydon became Indiana's first state capital, and it sits a short walk from the old capitol in the Shafer Building, an Italianate storefront built in 1892 by John Schafer for his St. Cloud Saloon. From 1949 to 2000 the same building held Jock's Lunch, a family diner. The restaurant opened in August 2019 and is led by chef Scott Dickenson, who cooks with fresh, local ingredients.

The cooking blends Southern classics with Asian flavors. The dinner menu has included shrimp and grits, General Tso pork belly or chicken over Brussels sprout fried rice, fried chicken with mac and cheese and collards, blackened salmon with sweet potato gnocchi, bison Salisbury meatballs, steak frites and a smash burger. Vegetarians have choices too, such as goat cheese dip, tempura broccoli and salads. There are separate lunch, drink and kids menus, and the bar is known for craft cocktails.

Lunch runs 11 to 3 Tuesday through Friday, and dinner is served from 4 every night but Sunday, until 8 most nights and 9 on Friday; Saturday is dinner menu only from noon to 9. The restaurant is closed Sunday. Reservations can be made online, and takeout ordering is available.

Lavender Creek Farm, which distills its own lavender and keeps a farm store, is about 5 miles east of downtown, roughly 12 minutes by car, so dinner here can close out a day at the farm.
