About Zimmerman Art Glass

Zimmerman Art Glass is a small glassblowing shop in a former gas station on Chestnut Street in downtown Corydon. The family's craft goes back to the 1880s, when the Zimmermans came from France and Ferdinand Zimmerman made punch bowl sets at a Pittsburgh glass factory. The next generation brought the work to Corydon in the 1920s. Today Kerry Zimmerman, a fourth-generation glassblower, works the furnace with his sons Brian and Alex, and in 2022 the state's Traditional Arts Indiana program funded an apprenticeship to pass the craft to the next generation.

Watching the work is the reason to stop. Kerry talks visitors through a live demonstration, something he does around 600 times a year for tourists, bus groups and school classes, and you can see a gather of molten glass turned into a finished piece. The shop shelves hold vases, handled dishes, paperweights, bottles, bowls, pitchers and drinking glasses in many colors, plus whimsical flowers, animals and fruit and a yearly piece that features an Indiana landmark. The family also makes memorial pieces that can hold a loved one's ashes, and offers custom etching.

In October the studio takes part in Glasstober, a two-day glass festival, and during the Christmas season visitors can sign up for one-on-one sessions to make their own glass ornament. The Harrison County visitor bureau lists the shop as open Tuesday through Saturday, closed Mondays and major holidays.

Lavender Creek Farm is about 5 miles east of downtown Corydon, roughly 12 minutes by car, so a glass demonstration and a farm store visit fit easily into one afternoon.
