About Ata Rangi

Clive Paton planted Ata Rangi's first vines in 1980 on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of Martinborough village, and it has since become one of New Zealand's best-known Pinot Noir producers. His sister Alison soon bought the block next door, and winemaker Phyll Pattie joined as a partner in 1986. The original Home Block was planted from cuttings of the Abel clone, which reached the country through a famous airport confiscation, and it is now the mother block for a clone widely grown across New Zealand. The estate farms about 32 hectares over 14 vineyards, with its own sites certified organic between 2014 and 2020.

At the cellar door, the wine shop is open seven days from 10am to 4pm, with tastings at NZ$15 per person, waived when you buy wine, and no booking needed. For a seated, guided tasting in the Wine Room (NZ$25 per person, also complimentary with purchase), book ahead: sessions run Monday to Saturday at 11am and 2pm, and daily at 11am from 1 November, with up to six guests.

No food is served at the cellar door, but several neighboring cellar doors offer lunch. Ata Rangi also has McCrone House for overnight stays and runs a native planting project on its Bush Block, where 75,000 trees have gone in. The cellar door is closed Good Friday, 25 and 26 December and 1 January; on 24 December only wine shop tastings run, until 3pm.

Ranui Essentials Lavender Farm is about 7 miles away, so an Ata Rangi tasting pairs with a lavender visit and lunch in Martinborough.
