About The White Swan Country Hotel

The White Swan Country Hotel sits in the middle of Greytown's Main Street, about 15 minutes from Martinborough. Its name goes back to 1862, when the steamer S.S. White Swan, carrying members of parliament and national documents to Wellington, ran onto a reef near Uriti Point east of Greytown; local farmers John and Mary Moore sheltered the crew and passengers for four nights, and the hotel counts them as its spiritual founders.

There are 13 places to stay. Seven deluxe suites sit upstairs in the hotel, each with its own theme (Homestead, Governors, Pinot Noir, Dark Skies, Lighthouse, Orchard and Hunter), several with balconies over Main Street. Six park rooms and suites in a garden block look over Stella Bull Park; Park Suite 2 has wheelchair access with an accessible shower and toilet. Check-in is from 2pm and check-out at 10am, parking is free, and breakfast is extra.

Food and drink run from the gastro pub, with a children's menu, to the deck, the Gin and Garden Bar and the Captain's Dining Room, an adults-only room named among New Zealand's top restaurants for the third year running. The kitchen works with local produce where it can, the wine list is entirely local, and the hotel lists hours of noon until late Monday to Thursday and 11am until late Friday to Sunday. Coming events include a Pink Ribbon Lunch on 8 November 2026 and Christmas party evenings through late 2026.

Lavender Abbey near Carterton is about 10 minutes north, so a night here works as a base for a weekend of Wairarapa lavender, orchards and wineries.
