About Lewis Farms

Lewis Farms is a family property at Poroutawhao, about ten minutes north of Levin on State Highway 1, and it has been in the Lewis family for four generations. Vincent Lewis bought the land in 1934 to milk cows. Later generations ran sheep, dairy cattle and bulls, and asparagus arrived when Geoff took over in 1986. Today Geoff's son Cam and his wife Catherine grow the berries, and the family also grows and packs asparagus under its own label.

The strawberries and raspberries grow on raised tabletops inside poly-tunnels, fed hydroponically and picked every day, which stretches the season far past a few summer weeks. Strawberries are in the shop from October to June, with a small crop through winter, and asparagus runs from September to December. This is not a pick-your-own farm: the team picks, and you buy the fruit fresh in the shop.

The packhouse shop is open daily from 8:30am to 5pm. Along with punnets of berries and bundles of asparagus, it sells real berry ice cream, chocolate-dipped strawberries, coffee and the farm's own whole-berry strawberry and raspberry jams. There is a playground for children, and you are welcome to bring your own container. Larger berry orders can be arranged by contacting the farm.

Lavender Creek Farm in Ōtaki is about 30 minutes south on State Highway 1. Its website does not list open days, so get in touch before planning a visit; Lewis Farms is an easy berry and ice cream stop either way.
