About Cakes Plus
Cakes Plus on Laurel Fort Meade Road is two businesses under one roof: a bakery turning out cakes, cupcakes, tortes and mini cheesecakes, and a supply shop for home bakers and candy makers. The bakery side is known for its signature cakes, designed by in-house decorators, and a rotating cupcake of the month; 2026 flavors have included Brownie Obsession, Watermelon Lemonade, Caramel Apple Bliss and Pumpkin Chocolate Chip.
You don't need an order to stop in. Fresh cakes and cupcakes are baked daily, so there's usually an assortment ready to take home, and staff will write an inscription on a cake while you wait. Signature cakes, tortes, cupcakes and mini cheesecakes can be ordered with about 48 hours' notice, while buttercream designs need a few days and gum paste or fondant work can need up to two weeks. Same-day custom orders aren't taken.
Every cake uses a house-made buttercream with a light almond note. Standard flavors are vanilla, chocolate, marble, red velvet and lemon, with spice added in fall and winter. Complimentary tastings run on Saturdays from 10:30 AM to 5 PM; appointments are recommended but not required, and weekday tastings can be booked by phone.
The supply side stocks baking pans, fondant and decorating tools, along with candy-making supplies and chocolate for melting. Serene Lavender Farm in Carroll County is the closest lavender farm on our list, about 40 minutes north, so a Laurel stop is easiest on the way to or from a farm day.
