Clever Hand Gallery is a cooperative shop on Central Street in Wellesley Square that has been selling fine crafts for more than fifty years. More than 50 New England artisans belong to the cooperative, and the members themselves staff the store, so the person ringing up your purchase may well be one of the makers.
The work leans toward things meant to be used and worn. Shelves are organized into pottery, jewelry, glass, clothing and accessories, pieces for children and pieces for the home, in both traditional and contemporary styles. Recent features have included knitted apparel made with yarns such as silk, linen and rice paper, and bead-crocheted necklaces by a local jeweler, who has shown visitors different ways to wear them.
Because the stock comes straight from regional makers, it is a good place to find a handmade gift with a New England story behind it. Gift certificates are sold as well. The gallery keeps afternoon hours and is closed on Mondays, so it fits nicely into a late lunch and a stroll around Wellesley's downtown shops.
The Upton Flower Kitchen in Upton is about 40 minutes southwest by Route 9 or the Mass Pike and I-495, so the gallery works as a stop at the start or end of a day spent west of Boston.
