About Deep Roots Distillery
Deep Roots Distillery sits on an apple orchard in Warren Grove, a short drive west of Charlottetown. Mike and Carol Beamish planted their first 200 apple trees in 1990, sold fruit from a roadside stand and later as U-pick, and had the orchard certified organic in 2005. After Mike retired, the couple turned to distilling and released their first bottles in July 2014.
The range includes a maple liqueur, an apple brandy made from the farm's own fruit in small batches of two 60-litre barrels a year, a traditional absinthe and a clear spirit called Island Tide, along with ciders, cocktails and maple syrup. Small limited runs sometimes appear only at the distillery, which is one reason to visit in person rather than buying in town.
The tasting room pours samples, cocktails and drinks on tap. Guided distillery tours show how the spirits are made, and visitors can also take a self-guided walk through the orchard. Pets are permitted, and the room is air-conditioned. The provincial tourism listing gives a season of May 15 to December 20, open weekends through Christmas and by appointment in winter, so call or email before a weekday or off-season trip.
Island Lavender Distillery in St. Catherines is about 15 minutes southwest, which makes an easy pairing on a July day when the lavender is ready to pick.
