About Forgeron Cellars

Forgeron Cellars has been making small-lot wines in Walla Walla since 2001, and its tasting room is in a former blacksmith workshop on West Birch Street, a short walk from the center of downtown. The winery says it works with many of the region's top grape growers to source its fruit. Its lineup includes Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon under both the Forgeron Cellars name and a second label called Anvil, a nod to the building's past.

The tasting room is open Thursday and Friday from 1 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m., according to their website. Reservations can be made by email at the tasting room, and Wednesdays are listed as reservation-only. Because the hours are short and only three afternoons a week, it is worth planning the visit around them or writing ahead.

The winery keeps an events calendar and a wine club on its website, and it posts recipes meant to go with its wines along with notes on Washington's growing regions, which can help if you are new to the state's wine areas. Being downtown makes it an easy stop to combine with lunch or a walk through Walla Walla's shops.

Blue Mountain Lavender Farm in Lowden is about 20 minutes west of downtown on US Highway 12. The farm grows more than 25 varieties and runs a summer boutique, so in June or July you can see the fields in the morning and arrive back in town for an afternoon tasting at Forgeron.
