About Va Piano Vineyards

Va Piano Vineyards takes its name from an Italian proverb about going slowly and steadily to get somewhere safely and far, and the pace fits the place. The estate and winery sit on J.B. George Road in the Southside district south of downtown Walla Walla, among the valley's vineyards. The focus is small lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and red blends made from the winery's own Walla Walla Valley estate vineyards, with some fruit from Columbia Valley growers. A few whites and a rosé are made in very limited amounts: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Rosé.

The Main Estate tasting room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and visits are by reservation only, so book a time on their website before you drive out. A tasting here is a chance to compare the estate reds side by side; the winery also pours a red blend called OX.

In town, Va Piano runs Bruno's, a downtown Walla Walla spot with indoor seating and outdoor tables when the weather allows, which makes an easy evening stop after a day in the countryside. The winery also has a tasting room in Bend, Oregon, and a wine club called La Famiglia that guarantees members allocations of the limited bottlings. Groups of six or more are asked to reserve ahead, and larger parties should contact the winery about arrangements.

Blue Mountain Lavender Farm in Lowden, west of Walla Walla along US Highway 12, is about 25 minutes away. It grows more than 25 lavender varieties and opens a boutique in summer, so a June or July day can start in the lavender rows and end with a reserved afternoon tasting on the south side of town.
