About George's of Galilee

George's of Galilee sits in the fishing port of Galilee in Narragansett, looking out over Block Island Sound. In 1948 Norman and Edna Durfee bought a small coffee shop called George's Lunch, where fishermen gathered before work, and turned it into a clam shack. It has since grown to six dining rooms over two floors, plus outdoor seating, a takeout window and a gift shop.

The restaurant credits itself with putting Rhode Island clam chowder, the clear-broth kind, on the map, and serves it plain or with tomato next to a thick New England chowder and a lobster bisque. On the current menu clam cakes are $9 a half dozen and two baked stuffed quahogs are $12. Beyond the shack classics there is whole roasted local fish, fish and chips in an Old English batter, lobster rolls served cold or hot, sushi from noon, and hand-cut steaks.

Families do well here: there is a kids' menu for ages 10 and under, and the menu marks gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan dishes. In summer the restaurant runs two tiki bars and food service on its own beach. Weeknights have themes, such as Taco Tuesday and Wine Down Wednesday, and the website keeps a calendar of events.

Lavender Waves Farm in Wakefield is about 12 minutes north. Book a cut-your-own slot in the late June to July bloom, then come down to the harbor for chowder and clam cakes.
