About Hermit Island Campground

Hermit Island Campground covers the southern end of Hermit Island in Phippsburg, on Casco Bay, with its mailing office in Bath. It has been taking campers since 1952, and it has stayed simple on purpose: 271 rustic sites for tents, pop-up trailers up to 25 feet, small vans and slide-on truck campers. RVs and hard-topped campers are not allowed, and neither are jet skis or ATVs, which keeps the island quiet.

The 2026 season ran from May 22 to October 12. The main summer stretch is late June to mid-September; late May through June and the second half of September are the quieter off-season weeks. Days here revolve around the water. There are eight named beaches, including Head Beach, Sand Dollar Beach, Sunset Lagoon and Spring Beach, which you reach by trail or by water, plus a set of marked trails across the island.

Every site has a fire pit, a picnic table and parking for one car, and hot showers are free. The camp store, open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in season, carries groceries, firewood, beach toys and live clams and lobsters, with lobster pots to rent. From late June a snack bar serves ice cream, and the Kelp Shed has a pool table, video games and outdoor ping pong. Canoes and rowboats rent on site, and there are three boat ramps. The campground is for registered campers only, so friends can't drop by for the day.

SeaLyon Farm, a lavender farm in Alna, is about 55 minutes north by way of Bath and Wiscasset. Check the farm's website for visiting days before you make the drive.
