About Kate Hill Wines

Winemaker Kate Hill and her husband Charles started their label in 2008, first turning a 19th-century apple shed into a winery and later adding a second site with a four-hectare vineyard and cellar door. Kate has made wine in South Australia, France, California and Chile before settling in the Huon Valley, about 25 minutes south of Hobart off the Huon Highway.

The tasting room is small and set in an 1880s heritage-listed cottage surrounded by country gardens, looking toward the Sleeping Beauty range and Hartz Mountains National Park. The current range includes a Kate Hill Shiraz, Four Winds Estate Chardonnay, Shiraz and Pinot Noir, and The Glen Pinot Noir. Cool-climate Pinot Noir is the focus, alongside Riesling and sparkling.

Tastings and tasting platters are available. You don't need to book a platter, but the team appreciates a heads-up. There's plenty of room for children to run around, with toys on hand and space to fly a kite off the escarpment. Groups of eight or more need to book ahead.

Campo de Flori, a small lavender farm at Glen Huon, is about 10 minutes away. Check their website for appointment times before planning both.
