About Willie Smith's Apple Shed

Willie Smith planted the first apple tree on this Huon Valley orchard in 1888, and four generations later the family still picks from it. In 1998 the orchard became Australia's first certified organic orchard, and in 2012 the family started making cider. The 151-acre farm sits about 25 minutes south of Hobart, and the cider is grown, pressed and made on site.

The Apple Shed is the farm's cellar door, bar and restaurant, open every day except Christmas Day. The cider list runs from Organic Apple and Bone Dry to a lighter Gold, a spiced ginger beer and a non-alcoholic apple cider, and there's also an apple brandy and limited releases such as Kingston Black. A self-guided Apple Museum tells the story of how Tasmania became the 'Apple Isle', and how its orchards declined and recovered.

The kitchen is best known for its apple pie, with shared platters, vegetarian and vegan mains and a kids' menu. Fridays stay open late, with free live music from 6:30pm. Saturdays bring a makers' market from 10am to 2pm, with music from midday. The shed also hosts weddings, Christmas functions in November and December, and private events.

Campo de Flori, a small lavender farm at Glen Huon, is about 20 minutes away through Huonville. Check their website for appointment times before combining the two.
