About Newton Farm Foods
Newton Farm Foods is the shop, butchery and café of a mixed farm at Newton St Loe, about 10 minutes from Bath, where the Gay family have farmed for generations as tenants of the Duchy of Cornwall. Hugh Gay is the third generation on the land, his son Josh is now taking over the day-to-day farming, and his daughter Kirsty set up the farm shop café.
What sets it apart is how the meat is raised. The suckler herd of pedigree South Devon, Aberdeen Angus and Hereford cattle grazes outdoors from spring to autumn, with calves staying with their mothers for eight to nine months. Cattle and sheep move through paddocks in rotation, pasture-raised chickens follow behind them, and the pigs are born on the farm without farrowing crates and fed a soya-free diet. The pasture is farmed without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, and the family has planted more than 200 trees and sown wildflower fields.
All of that ends up in the butchery, which sells the farm's own beef, lamb and pork, and in the café, which was named a farm café of the year for 2026 by the farm retail trade body. The café opens daily from 9am to 4:30pm, with the kitchen closing at 3:30pm, and tables can be booked on their website. The shop keeps the same hours, and on Thursdays fresh line-caught fish is sold. Dogs can join you in the outdoor seating area.
Somerset Lavender at Faulkland lies about 7 miles south, roughly 25 minutes by car, so a lunch here can lead into an afternoon at the lavender fields in summer.
