About Penner-Ash Wine Cellars
Penner-Ash Wine Cellars sits on a hilltop off Ribbon Ridge Road north of Newberg, looking across to the Dundee Hills, with Mt. Hood on the horizon on clear days. Pinot Noir is the focus, much of it single-vineyard and small-lot bottlings from around the Willamette Valley, and the winery also makes Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and rosé. The grounds include gardens, a patio and a separate Pavilion.
The estate is open daily by appointment. The standard Penner-Ash Tasting Experience is a seated, hour-long flight led by an estate host that compares current wines from different Willamette Valley sub-regions; it costs $45 per guest and is waived with a $130 wine purchase. The two-hour Legacy Tasting in the Pavilion pours estate and grower Pinot Noir plus library wines with seasonal bites, at $90 per guest. Booking ahead through their website is recommended, though walk-ins are seated first come, first served when there is room.
Wine is not sold by the glass, but you can order a bottle to share on the patio. Outside food is not allowed in the tasting room or on the patio, while the Oak Grove is open for picnics from June through September in good weather. All ages may come along with a parent or guardian, but there are no activities for children, and leashed dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas. Anyone buying or tasting wine must be 21 or older.
Thistle & Bloom, the organic lavender farm on Ladd Hill near Wilsonville, is about 35 minutes away, which makes a good July pairing of U-cut lavender in the morning and a booked tasting in the afternoon.
