About ROOST Coffee
ROOST Coffee is a family-run speciality roaster started in Malton in the summer of 2015 by Ruth and David, a textile designer and a youth worker who had already run a coffee shop for three years before moving to North Yorkshire. They roast 100% Arabica beans in small batches on electric roasters, buying green coffee through named partners in Colombia and Ethiopia.
The espresso bar is the place to taste it. It sits in an 18th-century, Grade II listed carriage house in Talbot Yard, Malton's courtyard of small food and drink producers, with exposed brick and leather sofas inside. Espresso drinks and pour-overs of the current coffees are on the menu, and every coffee on the shelf can be bought as whole beans or ground to take home. Dogs are welcome inside.
The bar opens Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 3pm. On Wednesdays from 1pm to 2:30pm it hosts a parent and baby club, where any hot drink and a cookie cost £5; pram space is limited, so a sling or carrier is easier. The roastery itself is at Malton Enterprise Park and can be visited by appointment only. The bar is listed in the independent coffee guide for the North and Midlands.
Woldies, the lavender farm at Wintringham on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, is about 6 miles east of Malton, roughly 15 minutes by car, so a morning coffee in Talbot Yard sets up a lavender visit nicely. Yorkshire Lavender at Terrington is about 20 minutes to the west.
