About SeaBear Smokehouse

SeaBear began in 1957 when Tom Savidge and his wife, Marie, built a smokehouse in their Anacortes backyard and sold smoked wild salmon to local taverns. The business was first called Specialty Seafoods before taking the SeaBear name, and it is still based in Anacortes, shipping from here to all 50 states with a staff of more than 80. In 1971 Tom developed the Gold Seal pouch, a sealed package that keeps smoked salmon without refrigeration, which is why SeaBear salmon travels so well in a suitcase or a picnic bag.

The store at 605 30th Street is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and closed Sunday. The company's lineup covers hot-smoked salmon and lox, wild salmon and other seafood, ready-to-eat pouches, salmon jerky, dinner fillets, chowders, soups and appetizers, along with gift boxes.

This is a good stop for picking up food for the road or gifts to bring home. The shelf-stable pouches are handy for a ferry day or a hike, and the chowders make an easy dinner later. The town's mayor even declared July 29 SeaBear Day, a sign of how long the smokehouse has been part of Anacortes.

Lavender Wind Farm on Whidbey Island near Coupeville is about 45 minutes south over Deception Pass. It offers U-pick lavender and a labyrinth in summer and keeps a year-round shop in Coupeville, so a summer loop can pair smoked salmon in Anacortes with lavender fields on Whidbey.
