About St. Ambrose Cellars

St. Ambrose Cellars is a meadery first, and the honey comes from the owners' own bees. Kirk and Sharon Jones started keeping bees in the late 1970s and built Sleeping Bear Farms into a honey business before opening the meadery in Beulah in the early 2010s. Most of the meads use star thistle honey from northern Michigan, and a few use tupelo honey from the Florida panhandle, where the family also keeps hives.

The list covers several kinds of mead. Still meads such as Tupelo Ambrosia are made in the traditional way; melomels add fruit, like the raspberry Razzmatazz; and the draft meads are carbonated like beer or hard cider, in flavors such as lemon, raspberry, apple and sour blackberry. There is also a cyser made with apples and honey, wine, and beer from the in-house Brose Brewing. You can order flights or glasses at the bar.

Food is served daily, and the kitchen closes an hour before the bar. The menu leans on wood-fired pizza, including one finished with Kirk's hot honey, along with burgers made with local beef, tacos, bowls and a few Louisiana touches such as boudin balls. Seating spreads across indoor rooms and an outdoor patio. Live music plays most weeks in the early evening, some Wednesdays are open mic nights, and the annual Barn Dance takes over a Saturday in September. Seating is first come, first served.
