About 222 Artisan Bakery

222 Artisan Bakery is a bread-first bakery and café on St. Louis Street in downtown Edwardsville. Owner Trevor trained in the professional program at the San Francisco Baking Institute, and his crew trains there too. The bakery works with sourdough, wild yeast and yeasted doughs, and it sources its grains with care.

The bread shelf holds rye, sourdough, brioche, multigrain and baguettes, and loaves can be sliced for you at the counter. Mornings bring laminated French pastries such as croissants, along with cinnamon rolls, quiche and breakfast burritos. Macarons and other sweets show up on certain days, and custom orders are possible when time allows.

At lunch the café makes sandwiches on its own bread, daily soups and salads. The coffee bar pours lattes, chai and teas with beans from a sister roaster, Plaid Coffee, in light, medium and dark roasts. The bakery has also taught bread classes through the continuing education program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Hours are early: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. That makes it a good breakfast stop before heading to Tenderloin Farms Lavender, about 15 minutes north of downtown, where visitors pick lavender and wildflowers in June.
