About Sacred Grounds Café

Sacred Grounds Café is an all-vegetarian restaurant and coffee shop on North Main Street in downtown Edwardsville. When it closed under earlier owners at the end of 2020, Kate Baumgartner took it over in January 2021 and reopened it the next month.

Since then the menu has grown to include many vegan and gluten-free options alongside the vegetarian standards, and daily specials rotate in. Breakfast includes plant-based takes on classics such as a breakfast burrito, eggs with toast, and biscuits and gravy, and the lunch side leans on sandwiches, salads and soups. The owner has said she buys ingredients the same day she cooks them and favors local and organic sources. Coffee drinks round it out, which makes it an easy stop for a meatless meal or a mid-afternoon break.

The café keeps long hours, listed by Illinois tourism at 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, so it works for breakfast before a farm visit or an early dinner after one. It has also offered take-home family meals on set weeknights, ordered ahead by phone.

Tenderloin Farms Lavender, a family farm where visitors pick lavender and wildflowers in June, is about 15 minutes north of downtown.
