About Balanced Rock Winery

Balanced Rock Winery is a family-owned boutique winery in Baraboo, close to Devil's Lake State Park, built around grape varieties that can survive a Midwest winter. Owners Matt and Kristin Boegner met at Michigan State University in 2003, settled in the Devil's Lake area and started working toward a Baraboo winery in 2015. Their first vintage used cold-climate grapes bought from Wisconsin growers, and the plan for their own seven-acre vineyard includes St. Pepin, Brianna, Frontenac, Petite Pearl and Marquette.

The winery and tasting room share a 6,000-square-foot building with a red-and-white barn-style front and a modern industrial interior, set on 22 acres inside the Baraboo city limits on land that was once farm fields and a driving range. It is open every day of the year. Tastings are offered daily for a fee, though they may pause during live music or special events, and no reservation is needed. Groups of eight or more should call ahead.

A food menu is served until 30 minutes before closing, and in the holiday season the winery sells charcuterie boards to go. Live music and events fill a published schedule on their website. Friendly dogs are welcome on a leash in the outdoor areas only, and owners are asked to keep them out of the flower beds.

New Life Lavender & Cherry Farm is on the north edge of Baraboo off the Highway 12 bypass, about a 10-minute drive. Its 2026 season has ended; in summer, a wagon tour through the lavender pairs well with an evening here after a hike at Devil's Lake.
