About Castle in the Country Bed & Breakfast Inn

Castle in the Country is a couples' bed and breakfast on 65 private acres south of Allegan. The main house, nicknamed the Castle, is a Queen Anne Victorian built in 1906 as a summer home for John and Caroline Wurtz. Ruth and Herb Boven bought it in 1990 and opened the inn in 1992 with four rooms. In 2004 they added the neighboring part of the old Wurtz estate, now a modern farmhouse called Castle Keep. Ruth runs the inn and Herb does the cooking and baking.

Today the two buildings hold 10 rooms and suites, each with a private bath, and most have a fireplace and a jetted tub for two. A homemade breakfast is served each morning at private tables in a dining room that looks out on a pond, and guests can add in-room dinner baskets or breakfast delivered to the room. There is a spa room for couples massages.

Outside, miles of wooded trails and a private lake fill the property, with kayaks and paddle boats in summer and snowshoes in winter, plus fire pits and gardens. The inn is adults-only, does not allow pets, and asks for a two-night minimum. Check-in is from 3 to 5 p.m. and check-out is by 11 a.m. It also hosts small weddings and elopements.

Shades of Lavender Farm near Mattawan is about 15 miles south and Summerhouse Lavender Farm near Fennville about 21 miles northwest, so a stay here can include either on a summer day.
